Introduction
Automated guided vehicles (AGV) are widely used in industrial production to transport goods. Due to the rapid development of smart factories and intelligent warehousing, the AGV system has become indispensable for such projects.
A traditional manufacturer from southern Taiwan brought in several AGVs for logistics automation. However, years after, they found out the AGVs were only equipped with partially automatic control, which led to additional labor to perform.
Therefore, under high pressures of cost competitiveness and increasing labor costs, manufacturers need to collaborate AGV with human-machine immediately for efficiency.

When building the AGV control system, we encountered that the hardware in the system does not communicate with each other because the protocols are different. So, besides safely connecting to the control room, the equipment has to avoid damage to the electronics by the magnetic stripe on the shop floor.
Cermate Solution
The implementation process of AGV control system integration can be divided into hardware construction and software planning. In this situation, the hardware includes “vehicle controller," “motion controller,” and “emergency power switch.” Firstly, Cermate recommends that customers use the IT407-24ST HMI as a bridge to connect the IT site and OT site to achieve remote monitoring.
IT407-24ST adopted a 24V DC power supply for HMI and is equipped with a touch screen; it would be more accessible to set up the AGVs. In addition, the built-in dual Ethernet ports are connected to the car controller and motion controller. Furthermore, they can connect to the serial port to emergency power switches and current switches. More importantly, IT407-24ST uses wireless network communication to help the AGVs' data be uploaded entirely to the control room without topography restriction and prevent too much wiring from blocking the AGVs running route.
Secondly, the customer uses PanelExpress (SCADA) as the software planning, which can realize complex graphical monitoring and select the required functions according to the field situation.
In this case, it was helping the customer to install PanelExpress on the 2/F PC so that the maintainer could ensure the operation of AGVs. However, the data analysis on the dashboard can find whether there is equipment failure, route obstruction, power exhaustion, or work instruction error. When encountering abnormal conditions, the maintainer can use PanelExpress to solve the problems, and if it is an emergency, they can turn off the emergency power immediately. Also, the resumable upload function would temporarily store data to prevent data loss due to emergencies. Furthermore, the customer chose the digital report function instead of recording the status of AGVs in handwriting every week. They have replaced handwriting paperwork with Excel/PDF file output, which saved the processing time and ensured that the data were correct.
